Handicap Championship

A bright and cheery afternoon saw seven mixed pairs battling it out for the Division Two and Below Mixed Doubles trophy at Elstree School. Last year’s winning pair had been split up meaning the field was open for a new pair of champions. Players from Kennet, Shaw, Newbury, Cannons and Kintbury clubs took part in a very competitive yet friendly day of badminton.

Our semi-finalists were Steve Pennington & Kathryn Meakin vs. Malcolm Taylor & Teresa Nightingale and Laurence Berry & Yvonne Masters vs. Cliff Verral & Jackie Walker. Laurence and Yvonne turned the tables on Cliff and Jackie and got their revenge for losing to them in the round robin stage. Steve and Kathryn stuck to their winning ways in the other semi and entered the final unbeaten.

The final match produced some excellent badminton that was enjoyed by the crowd. With both pairs giving their all, the revered trophy was eventually won by Laurence and Yvonne. Congratulations to all the players and many thanks to those who helped organise a successful day.
